THE LRC IS FOR YOUR USE. PLEASE HELP US MAINTAIN A QUIET, PLEASANT
ENVIRONMENT CONDUCIVE FOR WORK, STUDY, AND TEST-TAKING. ALWAYS
FEEL FREE TO CONTACT A STAFF MEMBER IF YOU ARE HAVING ANY
DIFFICULTIES IN USING THE FACILITY.
SERVICES:
Library staff members are on duty at the
CIRCULATION DESK to help library users with
resources and equipment.
General book collection is located in a closed stack area and is
retrieved on a "will call" basis. New books are displayed
in the Reading Lounge and the Circulation area and are ready for borrowing.
Reference collection includes encyclopedias, dictionaries, atlases, handbooks, and specialized
indexes covering all subjects.
A small collection is shelved in the temporary facility and others are "will
call."
Periodical collection. Current issues of popular magazines and newspapers are in the Reading
Lounge. Back issues, many of them in the form of microfilm to be used with microfilm
reader-printers, are also in a closed area. A list of periodicals received in this library and
their back issue holdings may be found on the LRC web pages.
Online periodical databases and other
resources are available through VIVA, a
consortium of academic libraries in Virginia to which DSLCC belongs.
VIVA provides almost 200 databases, many
of which have full-text articles available,
and approximately 800,000 electronic resources for the academic
community. Registered students and staff can also access the
materials from off-campus; consult the hyperlink "ACCESS FROM OFF-CAMPUS"
on the LRC web pages.
Special Collections materials are available to all library users and contain archival materials and
books relating to Virginia history. Most books are available for borrowing. The
materials are closed to browsing and are available on a "will call" basis.
Copy service for library books, periodicals, or personal papers is available from a coin-operated
machine near the Circulation Desk.
Microcomputers with high speed Internet access are available free-of-charge and are located
throughout the LRC.
Audio-visual materials (video cassettes, films, etc.) are indexed by title or subject in the
online catalog,
and are also available in a separate catalog on the LRC web pages. A book catalog of audio-visual materials is available to
non-profit organizations. Audio-visual equipment is located in the viewing areas near the
Reading Lounge.
Borrower's cards are issued to library clients as they borrow materials for the first time. The card
must be presented to borrow any materials. There is a charge for lost or damaged borrower's
cards.

Reserve books are placed on restricted circulation by faculty for class use. Request them at the
Circulation Desk.
Interlibrary loan from other Virginia libraries is available for books and magazine articles not
available in the area. Usually the materials are received in less than a week.
REGULATIONS:
Loan period for books is two weeks, with renewals permitted if books are not in demand. All
books are due at the end of each semester. Audio-visual materials may be borrowed by non-profit
organizations for a restricted loan period. Library materials, with the exception of reserve items,
checked out by another borrower may be placed on HOLD; the requestor will be notified when
the material is available.
Restricted circulation. Reserve books, reference books, and periodicals are usually used only in
the library, except that some reserve books may be checked out for specific periods of time.
Fines of five cents per day including weekends and holidays are charged for overdue books on
two-week loan, and twenty-five cents per hour for reserve books.
Overdue book borrowers are notified by mail and their names are posted
with the Business Office. Notices for books that are thirty days overdue are given to the Business Office for
collection. State law requires that students are not allowed to register for
classes until all obligations are
satisfied. Unpaid fees may be routed to a collection agency or the Commonwealth
for a lien against tax refunds.
Lost books should be reported promptly in order not to accumulate fines. The replacement cost of
the books must be paid.
