10
reasons why the Internet is no substitute for a library
The Dabney S. Lancaster Community College LEARNING RESOURCES CENTER provides its college community with one of the larger collections in the VCCS. More than 50,000 items,
including magazines, video cassettes, compact discs, and CD-ROMs, are indexed in the
On-line Public Access Catalog
and are arranged on the shelves for easy access. A wide array of services are also available to
students, community residents and non-profit organizations.
Alphabetical
List of VIVA
Resources -- almost 200
databases,
8,800 full-text
journals,
nearly 10,000
full-text works
of poetry and
drama and
over 300,000
additional
full-text
materials When beginning a search over the WWW, you may be tempted to download the first pieces of
information which supply your needs regardless of the web site you have reached. That process can be very dangerous with academic research, since
there are articles that may be interesting, but not authoritative. There are, however, several articles, pamphlets, etc., which can be of valuable
help in evaluating sites for accuracy and authenticity. As one "surfs the net" for research purposes, it is wise to keep these points in
mind. Fortunately, the VIVA-leased databases have already been evaluated for us.
Other sites may need a more critical eye.
