Britannica Guide to Black History‑‑click on Black History, then choose your time period to look at articles on topics (Brown v. Board of Education, Negro League, Freedmen's Bureau, African‑Methodist Episcopalian Church) or on important  individuals in politics, history, the arts, education, religion, etc.

Colonial and Early American Web Resources

Colonial Williamsburg Foundation:  Notable for its "Electronic Field Trips," and highly recommended by our history faculty.

Chronology of U.S. Historical Documents:  complete with linked texts.

History of the United States‑‑a great collection of primary source materials.

Hoover Presidential Library‑‑important files covering Hoover's achievements, and thus early 20th century American history

Making of America‑‑a nice collection of primary documents on subjects as wide‑ranging as agriculture, etiquette, yellow fever.

National Archive:  Includes exhibits, National Audiovisual Information Locator (which searches NARA's huge collection of stills, motion pictures, videos, audio recordings), and the government information locator, and individual files like the JFK assassination records.  Great source.

University of Calgary History Department‑‑includes a guide to writing historical essays and book reviews, writing and multimedia tutorials, and more.

University of Washington History Department:  Notable for its "History Writing Center", which includes how‑to guides on writing test essays and papers, using primary vs. secondary sources, and evaluating evidence.  Highly recommended.

Encyclopedia of the Orient‑‑covers the history and culture of countries which  we would call the middle east. 

Historical Text Archive‑‑a great collection of primary documents, world‑wide.


HyperHistory Online‑‑includes timelines, "lifelines" (as in who lived when), and historical maps.  The World History chart is a nice chronology, from David and Solomon through Roosevelt and Churchill.

Archival Data Online Repository‑‑will be a major source of important historical and social science data.  Already includes data on US civil disorders, 1961‑68, Russian and French bureaucracies of 18th and 19th centuries, and several other studies.

British Society of Sport History:  prime source for the new course in sport history.

FirstSearch‑‑web access to OCLC's collection of 65 databases, including Article First, Humanities Index (which indexes history journals), Social Sciences Index, Books in Print, Dissertation Abstracts, etc.
